quick tip: ending a sentence

Just something I was thinking of when I was doing an edit that I wanted to pass on: the end of a sentence is the most important part, so whenever possible, make sure the end of your sentence is where the umph is.

At the end of the day, he’s always going to be an asshole.

He’s always going to be an asshole, at the end of the day.

The end of the day is not the important part of this sentence; the unnamed asshole is. End with that and give your sentences more impact.

*to the anon who asked about dialogue tags, yes, I am happy to do a post on that. I’ll put it next on my list!

Super Silky Summer Legs

Next time you are feeling down, about to binge, going on a date, or just need to pamper yourself, do this. I just did it and I can not stop rubbing my legs together. It feels like I paid for that over expensive pedicure at the salon.

Ingredients

1 1/4 C Sugar (Yup, plain, good-ol’ white sugar)

1/2 C Oil (I used olive oil, but you can use any oil, coconut oil, baby oil, canola oil)

3 tablespoons Citrus (Lime or lemon)

1-2 Razors

Mix everything together in a bowl.

Soak your legs in the tub for 5 minutes.

Shave your legs.

Rub some of this mixture all over your legs. The sugar will help rub off all dirt and dead skin. Rub, rub. Feels like a mini massage.

Rinse it all off, shave again. I would use one razor per leg if you have two. You will be rinsing this razor a lot. I was GROSSED out by the amount of dead skin I was “shaving” off. It was insane! Trust me, you’ll see.

Rub your legs again! Second coat of wax, oh yeah.

Rinse off! You can use a mild soap to help get some of the oil off.

Lotion your legs up, and feel the silkiness!

Now this isn’t just geared to ladies…. guys, if you want to get lucky, I suggest you offer to rub your ladies’ feet with this mix too. It feels awesome, and when you get lucky, you will be thanking me that her rough grandma feet aren’t cutting your legs, if ya know what I’m saying… hahaha.

I have silky arm pits too!!

Try it, I swear, You will want everyone to touch your legs.

i just did this and after about 2 or so months of not shaving this is the most incredible thing i have ever done its like my legs arent even legs they’re some sort of ancient fabric made only for powerful pharoahs

i highly suggest this even if you don’t shave use it on your feet or shave your pits or your pubes with it because you will feel like a fucking deity

Sometimes, an editor is lucky enough to pull a manuscript from the slushpile that curls up in your lap like a kitten and makes itself at home. Several months ago, I pulled a manuscript called GONE. It was a romance—sort of. It was a mystery—sort of. It didn’t fit into any specific genre and I did not care one whit, because it was gorgeous.

Today, is GONE’s birthday and I am thrilled to have the extremely talented author, Barb Han, guest blogging for me. She’s going to talk a little about showing vs. telling, something so many of us struggle with.

Showing versus Telling

Showing allows readers to experience the events of a story alongside the point of view character by using action, words, and senses. Done well, it strengthens the reader’s relationship to the story. Telling, on the other hand, distances the reader. It’s the equivalent of standing next to someone and whispering in their ear exactly what you want them to think. The effect is the same. I can almost hear them shouting, “Get out of my head.”

To illustrate the difference between the two, I brought a few examples from my new release, GONE, which is coming out Friday.

Telling: Keegan’s look said he understood and approved.

Showing: Keegan gave a quick nod and turned his attention back to his jerky.

Do you get the sense of action from the second version? It’s far less intrusive when we see the response from the POV character rather than when we’re told by the author.

Telling: Elizabeth expected all hell to break loose at the personal intrusion.

Showing: Elizabeth drew in a quick breath at the personal intrusion.

Elizabeth has a reaction we can almost feel ourselves.

Telling: It was obvious Mother understood his implication by her sheer look of repulsion.

Showing: Mother narrowed one eye and twisted her lips into a smirk.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a little scared of Mother now.
